Fantastic opportunity to train for massage Theraphy certification at your own pace, three times per week . Classes are offered in the morning and evening and completion is determined by the accumulation of 700 hours of Schooling which qualifies you for the Massage and Body Work Examination- MBLEX exam.The clinic part of the program starts after three months from start and is done in private rooms not with all students present in one room.One star off because not all students get to work with both instructors.
There was a moment when I wasn’t sure what to say about this program. I didn’t want it to sound like I was just kissing anyone’s ass but the truth is, this program changed me. It made me more empathetic, more aware, and showed me that massage therapy reaches far beyond the physical.
In today’s world, the power of human touch is often overlooked. But this program reminded me that touch can heal in ways we don’t always see — in the mind, the heart, and the spirit.
It had its characters, like any program does, but through it all I found peers I respected and learned from, and instructors who cared just as much about helping the soul as they did the body. They taught me that sometimes healing comes from slowing down, listening, and simply feeling.
Since graduating, I’ve had people tell me my work has healed them in ways they didn’t think were possible. Sometimes that means relieving pain, other times it’s helping them breathe again to just let go. And even though I know I still have more to learn, I’m proud that what I do now comes from what I learned here.
This program taught me more than technique. It taught me humility, empathy, and presence. I’m grateful I finished it, because it didn’t just help me find a career it helped me find a purpose

The program is flexible enough to be doable as an adult, with both day and night options, yet academically extensive as a diploma program, which left me very well prepared for all examinations and for practical life as a therapist.

Their emphasis on hands-on training, proper body mechanics, and a wealth of knowledge backed by real-life experience makes the learning both practical and powerful. At the same time, they work hard to cultivate a family-like atmosphere where students feel supported and motivated.

Attending SOHMAR was a life-changing experience. The education I received was thorough and covered a wide range of massage therapy techniques that prepared me well for the MBLEx, which I’m proud to say I passed!

This is hands down the best massage school in Illinois! Mike, the owner, and Steve are not just excellent teachers—they make you feel like family. They genuinely care about their students and create such a positive atmosphere. The amount of knowledge you gain here is incredible, and it all happens without unnecessary pressure or stress. I just got home from my weekly Reflexology class and wanted to be sure to review SOHMAR while it was fresh in my mind :) Mike is outstanding as a teacher and an overall human being - he shares so much wisdom with his students - beyond the mechanics of what he is teaching. He is compassionate and kind and his bad 'dad' jokes are hilarious :) I have always wanted to get licnesed as a massage therapist but due to time and finances, my Reflexology certification was a foot in the door for me. My success is all because I went to SOMAR! I am coming into my 20th year of being a successful massage therapist for a very busy hospital system in Wisconsin. I never would have found my dream career and been educated to be the Therapist I am today if it wasn't for Michael McAleese and his school. His testimony alone is he is still going strong today after the 20 years I had been a student when many massage schools folded with Covid 19. Thanks to Mike Mcaleese, Star and their team, I am now a Licensed Massage Therapist. They are able to cater to the adult learner! During my time at their school, they were always available to answer my questions, give me tips on how to study for tests (20 years post college) and they supported me through some challenging times (personally). They really work with the WHOLE person, which is so critical, especially when learning such a personal thing such as massage. I have attended nail school, esthetics school and now massage school. I was really nervous when choosing a massage school, since I had not had great experiences with nail school or esthetics school. Two friends had attended SOHMAR and loved it so I decided to give them a try. SOHMAR was by far the best experience of all the schools I attended! I left school feeling prepared not only to take and pass the state exam (which I did) but also to work in a spa with confidence. The teachers listened to my needs, gave me the tools I needed to build a great clientele, and taught in a way that no matter your learning style you got it! I've been getting massages from Mike for well over 5 years. He does an excellent job of getting to know you and what you're looking for in the massage. He really understands athletes, the demands they place on their body and the work they need done. He's also built a reputable and quality massage therapy program. At times, I've gotten a massage during a student clinic - for a lesser price but still the same quality approach. I can't say enough good things about Mike and his team.

I'm going to go ahead and say out loud that there's no better gift than a gift certificate to get a massage. Think about it.
I redeemed my gift certificate a year after I had gotten it for a gift. Not sure why I waited so long. My sister always raves about her massage sessions with Michael at SOHMAR and I was lucky enough to experience his talents.
It was my first time seeing him so he took the time to get to know me and see what I needed work on. I was in an accident 2 years ago and he made sure to pay the correct attention to my injuries. Michael does a great job with conversation because he leaves it up to you whether or not you want to talk during the massage.
The massage was great! Perfect pressure and amount of time spent on different areas. I will definitely be back!
